last weekend of summer and a lot of kids are heading back to school, president obama and the democrats are eparing for their big moment. it is their turn to make their case that the president deserves four more years. their convention opens tomorrow in north carolina, and tonight as thousands of democrats descend on the city of charlotte republicans have already begun their counterattack, asking a question that we've heard before -- are you better off now than you were four years ago? we have two reports tonight beginning in charlotte with our political director and chief white house correspondent who is down there somewhere chuck todd. good evening. >> good evening, kate. while the republican convention was designed to reintroduce the country to mitt romney as a person this democratic convention is getting off to a bit of a defensive start as the obama campaign seems to be struggling with touting improvements to the economy without looking insensitive to the millions still struggling. gathering in charlotte to make the case their economic vision is better for america than the one outl
. and as of tonight, the nation is still at war. president obama the incumbent now has an opponent to run against. this is the chance for obama/biden to make their case against romney/ryan and ask americans for their vote again. tonight we'll see the keynote and hear from first lady michelle obama. and with that ahead of us, let's go to our political team here in charlotte. four white house correspondents, current and former, beginning with chuck todd down on the floor of the north carolina delegati delegation. chuck, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. if the republican convention was all about trying to present mitt romney's softer side, the democratic convention has a different goal for the president. shoring up votes from hispanics and women. as workers inside the hall put finishing touches on the convention stage, democrats prepare to appeal to two key constituencies, women and hispanics. they favor the president but lack the enthusiasm they had for him four years ago. leading the charge on women, michelle obama. >> are you ready for this? >> reporter: in all, five of the prime t
speeches from governor mart ten in o'mal. this is the same honor president obama had at the convention in 2004. first lady michelle obama will also speak tonight. president obama is not in charlotte for the convention just yet. today he will be in virginia forthfinal stop on his road to charlotte tour. the president will speak this morning at norfolk state university. he was in charlottesville last week to campaign part of a tour of college towns in battleground states. the president will speak at the dnc thursday night. >> if you are willing to work with me. if you're willing to work even harder in this election. then i promise you, i promise you, i promise you change will come. >> republican national committee is launching the web ad to coincide with the start of the convention. the ad compares speeches president obama gave this year to speeches me made four years ago. republicans say it proves the president has broken his promise to a improve our economy. >>> you may not know it but the polls just opened for thousands of voters in northern virginia. there's a special election there
months. >>> we are now less than two months until the presidential election, and both president obama and mitt romney are raising big bucks. the latest numbers show the president outraised romney in august, bringing in $114 million. the republican nominee raised $111 million. he had outraised president obama in the three previous months. despite the president's advantage in august, it was the third straight month that romney raised more than $100 million. romney will be in ohio today, another crucial state that could decide the election. he talked to david gregory in an exclusive interview on meet the press yesterday. he told gregory, if elected, he plans to repeal and replace obama's health care law, but he added he would keep parts of that law that he thought would help americans. >> there are a number of things i like in health care reform that i would put in place. one is to make sure that those with prexwiexisting conditions get coverage. two is to allow people to have policies that cover their families to whatever age they like. and also allow individuals to buy health insurance
